REC C.O. 4452 (Rec O FEI 09

Attorney General's Chambers, Hongkong, 7th January, 1909

Your Excellency,

In reply to the confidential despatch of the Secretary of State of 6th December communicating through Your Excellency, a claim to me of Mme Sawtell for the sum of £13.13 I have the honour to state I was entirely unaware until the receipt of such communication of any alleged indebtedness on my part to Mme Sawtell and I have no recollection of ever receiving any application in regard to such claim.

2. I am aware that some years ago my wife purchased some things from her and that I paid for them and I thought that any account she had against me was settled years ago.

3. I shall at once communicate with my wife who is in England on the subject and if there is found to be any money due to Mme Sawtell it will of course be paid forthwith.

His Excellency The Governor.

I have the honour to be Sir Your Excellency's most obedient Servant

W Rees Davies
